How to linkup with DISCS from home

Written by Winston Avalon

Before I begin, let me carify somethings first. Firstly, I am not authorized by anyone to write this. I only wrote it to help some of my fellow classmates with the problems they have in linking up with the school network. Secondly, all the below mentioned method works for ISCS students. It may and may not work for anyone else. Thirdly, due to different implementation of the system or configuration, certain mentioned events may occur differntly or may not occur at all.

To Link up with the Internet through DISCS

To link up, you will need a Dialer software. I previously used Netscape Dialer provided by Netscape Personnel Edition. Now I am using Dialup Networking provided with Windows 95 itself. This is the recommended choice for dialup, but there are several others like MS Internet Explorer Dialer, which is provided at NUS. To get this software, access the lab and select Windows Shopping through a NUSNET terminal to get the Dialup software. It includes NUSPPP.EXE ( Configuration for MS Internet Explorer ) and DLBASE.EXE which is actually Internet Explorer Version 2.0.

I will explain the procedure of Configuration for Windows Dailup Networking here.

Go to Dialup Networking under My Computer. If you don't have it, then you must have not installed it when you installed Windows 95. Just go to Control Panel and select Add/Remove New Software and choose to install Dialup Networking under Communications. Make sure you also install the SLIP, PPP, TCP/IP and etc protocols, but PPP is most important.

Choose Make New Connection and give it a name like DISCS or something.

Click Configure and then select Options and Bring up terminal after dialing. The rest of the modem settings I leave it to you because different modems can make diferent changes.

Click Next and the enter the telephone number, for example 7765022. the area codes is quite uneccessary but if you ae interested, you can find out more from other sources. The full list of number is given at the bottom of this document.

Now click Next and then Finish to complete making of a dialup setup.

There are however some settings that you are not prompted for and you must set.

Right click on your configuration and select Properties. Select Server Types and then set it to PPP : Windows 95, Windows NT, internet. Then you must check the box that says TCP/IP. Make sure you uncheck all the rest.

Click on TCP/IP Settings next and then select Server assigned IP Address on top and Specify name server addresses in the middle. Then enter 137.132.86.2 as the Primary DNS and 137.132.87.2 as the Secondary DNS.

The rest such as scripting will not be discuss here, but I may include another document as a late time to cover this. Click ok all the way to exit.

Go ahead and click on the configuration to dial up.

Try until you get a answering and following by the noise and you will see something like this:

enter username>

You will be asked for your username. Enter your username. For example : leongboo

Nte that this is NOT the same ID as the NUS Dialup!

Then something like : enter password>

You will be asked to enter password. Enter your DISCS password.

Then you will see a menu that comes out and there will be a five seconds wait.

After which, you will see a menu of choices. Just choice choice 12.: Activate PPP.

Press Enter and you will see some junk letters start appearing. Just press F7 or click Continue on your console.

Now just load your browser if the program does not load it automatically.

To Link up with the DISCS

You can also link up to the Unix server through a modem dialup. To link up with the servers, you will need a Telecommunication software like Telix, Telemate, Terminate or Procomm Plus, just dial any of the numbers below:

DISCS : 1800-7760522, 7762822, 7764822, 7765022, 7767522

After the connection message. Press Enter.

You will be prompt for ID then password. Use the dialect name ID.

You wil be put into the Unix enviroment. It will behave just like the Unix in the Terminal Rooms.

See your department for help on operating the Unix system.
